Every state has a preservation office, duly called their ‘State Historic Preservation Office’ or SHPO for short. Each state administers their programs and services specific to that particular State and includes programs such as National Register of Historic Places, tax incentives, easements, grants, technical assistance, Section 106 review, and education programs.

Founded in 1910 to protect New England’s cultural and architectural heritage, Historic New England is an internationally known museum and national leader in preservation, research, and innovative programming. HNE is headquartered in Boston, with museums located throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
The Maine Historic Preservation Commission is a state agency, and is responsible for the identification, evaluation, and protection of Maine’s significant cultural resources as directed by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The Commission oversees the statewide survey program, nominates properties to the National Register of Historic Places, reviews development activities for their effect on cultural resources, co-ordinates rehabilitation projects under the Preservation Tax Incentives Program, assists local governments in survey work and the design of preservation guidelines, and is involved in a variety of public education activities.
Maine Preservation is a statewide, private, nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the irreplaceable architectural heritage, historic sites and communities of Maine. This site features links to funding sources, preservation organizations, technical assistance, professionals, legislation and upcoming preservation-related events in Maine.
Greater Portland Landmarks’ mission is to enrich the quality of life in Portland and surrounding communities by promoting the appreciation, preservation and appropriate use of historic structures and landscapes.
A terrific resource for preservation information and resources is the Preservation Directory. PreservationDirectory.com is the online resource for historic preservation, building restoration and cultural resource management in the United States and Canada. Their goal is to foster the preservation of historic buildings, historic downtowns and neighborhoods, cultural resources, and to promote heritage tourism by facilitating communication among historic preservation professionals and the general public.
The Center for Painted Wall Preservation is dedicated to the research and preservation of eighteenth and early nineteenth century American paint-decorated plaster walls. PWP aids homeowners in the research, appreciation, documentation, conservation and restoration of their painted plaster walls, including murals and stenciled designs.
